Development of advanced composite material for the Oil & Gas Industry

Vello Nordic AS develops composite products based on glass fibre and carbon fibre to be used in advanced applications within the oil and gas industy, where the use of light composite materials is a driving force in new technology. Our competence and knowledge within this field is outstanding, combining specialists with Ph.D in polymer chemistry and years of experience in manufacturing of composite materials.     

Vello has already more than 10 years of experience working on advanced projects within this sector – mostly based on carbon fibre. For instance Vello has in cooperation with FMC Technologies developed the world’s first composite cable for light well intervention. The cable consists of carbon fibre composite materials with three electrical conductors in centre. Currently Vello is involved in several projects developing composite cables with optical fibres – with or without electrical conductors in addition. 

Further Vello has developed VELLO® Umbilical Rod. This is a high modulus carbon fibre rod produced in long lengths, meant for use in umbilicals for deep waters. So far these have been implemented as strengthening members in deepwater umbillical installations in the Gulf of Mexico and offshore West Africa. Current projects also include carbon fibre as armouring material in flexible risers for ultra deepwater installations.
